Sulfuring, Kawah Ijen
Kawah Ijen, and the Ijen National Park of which it is part, is arguably the best-known site in East Java. Its summit is at 2799 meters.
Its turquoise lake is the largest acid crater lake in the world ! His solfatare produces large quantities of sulfur ore that miners collect with their bare hands and then carry on their shoulders. Once the baskets are full, weighing 70 to 100kg depending on the capacity of the carriers, they set off for the ascent of the crater then the descent (4 km) to the first house where the first weighing takes place, then to the car park where minors will receive their salary according to the weight transported. By Javanese standard, these men are fairly well paid, about twice as many as a rice paddy worker, but their life expectancy is 45 years due to the exposure to gas and the considerable weight of the baskets.
