Tongkonan's Hecatomb

Tongkonan is the name of the traditional ancestral home, or rumah adat, of the Toraja people. Tongkonan have a characteristic boat-shaped roof and are built on stilts . Building a tongkonan is a big job requiring the participation of the whole village. At the end of the work, all come together to celebrate the event.

On this occasion, as an offering for the gods and food for the guests, an incalculable number of pigs are killed, burned, butchered : a Dantesque scene where the green grass ends up red.
