The offering to the volcano god

Hindus on the island of Java meet every July 21 for the Yadnya Kasada ceremony at the top of the Bromo volcano which rises to 2,329 meters above sea level. Its crater is 800 meters in diameter. Arrived at the top, the faithful throw offerings in the crater. The origin of this ritual dates back to the 15th century. A sterile princely couple would have implored the help of the gods in the Tengger massif, a hundred kilometers south of Surabaya. The gods would have set a condition: that their last child (the 25th) be offered as a sacrifice to the volcano and thrown into the crater. The Kasada festivities last a month. On the 14th day, the faithful walk up to the crater to perpetuate the tradition.
